Aim:

To assess whether the pitch/s conform to standards set out by Sport England and the RFL.

Method:

To measure:

  • Sward content & coverage.
  • Weeds.
  • Pests & diseases.
  • Surface levels.
  • Gradient & orientation.
  • Height of cut.
  • Pitch dimensions.

Timing:

  • During season.
  • Out of season.

Effects of Incorrect Procedure:

  • Poor standard pitch/s.
  • Loss of play due to poor surface conditions.
  • Loss of revenue.
  • Reputational damage to club and volunteer groundsmen.

Equipment:

  • Quadrat.
  • Straight edge, wedge & spirit level.
  • Compass.
  • 100 m surveyors measuring tape & pins.
  • Rising plate.

Practical Tips:  

  • There are alternatives using readily available items to complete these tasks rather than expensive specialist equipment.
  • Allow 2 hours to complete all of these tasks and log results for complete records.
