The aim of this operation is to firm and smoothen the square after any frost heave during the winter and to begin the consolidation process for pitch preparation.

What’s involved

Before starting to roll, check the square for any debris such as twigs etc. Start with a light roller or 36 inch mower and build up to 1 to 1.5 ton roller. Roll in different directions evenly over the square but always finish rolling down the line of play.

Timing of use

March and April depending on the spring weather.

Effects of incorrect procedure

Rolling with the wrong weight of roller or in the wrong conditions will create a crust on the pitch reducing pace and bounce.

Equipment needed

Hand roller, 36 inch mower with a weighted box and then the heavy roller of 1 to 1.5 tons.

Practical Tips

Keep the grass a little longer on the square to protect the grass when doing the spring rolling.
