Eye Protection

On average 1000 injuries to people’s eyes occur every day! 75% by impact, 10% by ingress of foreign bodies (dust) and 15% from chemical burns.

Why:                The majority of eye injuries can be prevented if eye protection is worn.

Outline:           This talk will cover: Hazards and the advantages of wearing eye protection.

 

Potential hazards to the Eyes

  1. The use of hammers and chisels (Contact from flying debris).
  2. The use of compressed air and any gas of vapour under pressure.
  3. Work conducted using abrasive materials (abrasive wheels) where sparks may be generated, or wheel might explode at speed.
  4. Work with any tools that will result in chippings being broken off.
  5. When welding ultraviolet light is given off, causing retinal damage, welding spatter can burn the eye.
  6. The handling of or coming into contact with corrosive or irritant substances, such as acids, alkalise and other chemicals.
  7. Handling and use of cartridge tools.
  8. Cutting wire or metal strips under tension.

Wearing Eye Protection

  1. You have a legal obligation to use the eye protection provided in accordance with health and safety regulations.
  2. Do not enter areas where eye protection is required unless you are wearing suitable eye protection.
  3. Ensure your eye protection fits and is suitable for the task.
  4. Ensure any eye protection issued is maintained to a good standard.
  5. Ensure that any damaged, lost, or unserviceable eye protection is reported and replaced immediately.
  6. Ensure that eye protectors are comfortable to wear and are clean.
  7. If you do get some foreign object in your eye, use the eye wash provided or get assistance from a qualified first aider.
