Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

PPE should be used as a last resort. Wherever there are risks to health and safety that cannot be adequately controlled in other ways, it may be the last line of defence you have against injury in the event of an accident.

Types of PPE

  1. Head Protection
  2. Eye protection
  3. Hearing protection
  4. Footwear
  5. Gloves
  6. Body protection
  7. Respiratory (RPE), eye and hearing protection will be covered in more depth in specific talks.

 

Selection of PPE

  1. The requirement to use PPE must first be determined by a risk assessment – refer to existing risk assessments or conduct a new risk assessment.
  2. PPE should only be used as a last resort. Consider other control measures before resorting to the use of PPE.
  3. PPE must be properly assessed before use to make sure it is fit for purpose.
  4. Ensure PPE is UKAC/CE marked.
  5. Personal Protective Equipment is PERSONAL and should not be shared.

Use of PPE

  1. Training on the use and care of PPE must be given for that being issued or used.
  2. The ‘Manufacturers/suppliers guidelines’ must be followed when using PPE.
  3. Inspect PPE prior to each use and report any defects to your supervisor.
  1. Do not use PPE that is damaged or has exceeded its shelf life.
  2. You are to used PPE correctly and not tamper with or modify PPE.

Care of PPE

  1. Look after PPE that has been issued to you, it is intended to protect you against hazards and prevent injury or ill health.
  2. Protect PPE against unnecessary damage and exposure to chemicals.
  3. PPE must be kept clean and serviceable.
  4. PPE shall be maintained and stored properly.
  5. Report defective PPE to your line manager immediately.

PPE will not provide protection unless it is correctly selected and WORN!
