Fire

Reason:               Fire kills more than 1000 people each year and injures thousands more.

Why:                You can prevent fires, you can also be the cause of fires.

Outline:           This talk will cover: Fire prevention, precautions, types of extinguishers and emergency actions in the event of fire.

Fire Prevention – Here are some of the more common and easy precautions you can take:

  1. Do not allow rubbish and debris build up.
  2. Do not smoke in prohibited areas – dispose of your cigarette butt safely.
  3. Use the correct ‘sealed’ containers for flammable liquids. Not open buckets or tins.
  4. Flammable liquid containers should be stored in a suitable cabinet.
  5. Handle flammable liquids at a safe distance from sources of ignition.
  6. Do not overload electrical sockets.
  7. Check for combustible material prior to conducting any ‘hot work.’
  8. Do not store flammable items (rubbish skips/bins etc) against or close to building walls.
  9. Arson is the most common cause for fire

Q. What checks should you conduct before and after welding or cutting?

Q. How would you store flammable liquids?

Emergency Preparedness

  1. Ensure you are aware of the emergency fire procedures.
  2. Ensure you know the escape route to be used in the event of a fire.
  3. Keep fire routes and doors clear from obstructions.
  4. Do not obstruct access to, remove or cover up fire extinguishers.
  5. Ensure you know how to operate the fire extinguisher in your area.

Q. Name the precautions to be use with regards to fire extinguishers.

Q. List five ways of preventing fires.

Fire Extinguishers

  1. Water (Red) – Use on paper, wood, and solid flammable material.
  2. CO2 (Black) – Use on liquids, gasses, and electric fires.
  3. Foam (Cream) – Use on flammable liquids.
  4. Powder (Blue) – Use on all types of fires but predominately fires involving metal.
  5. Wet Chemical (Yellow) - Use on paper, wood, cooking oils and fats.

Q. What kind of fire would a water extinguisher be used on?

Q. What extinguisher would be used on burning liquids

Actions to Take in the Event of Fire

  1. Raise the alarm then call the fire brigade.
  2. Evacuate the building in which you work.

Read Evacuation Notice NOW. You will not have time in the event of a fire.

Fight the fire with extinguishers, if small enough, but do not put yourself at risk.
