Why: It is important you know how to use your hand tools correctly.

Hazards When Working with Hand Tools

  1. Do not lay tools down so they can fall or be knocked over.

  1. Do not leave tool lying on walkways or any place they could cause a trip hazard.

  1. Ensure hammerheads remain tightly fitted on their shafts.

  1. Renew wooden handles that are split. Don’t try to repair them.

  1. Ensure that striking tools are regularly dressed.

Safe Use of Hand Tools

1. Select the correct tools for the job; consider the safest possible option.

2. Ensure tools are in good working condition.

3. Use tools only as they were designed to be used (Homemade tools are to be avoided).

4. When cutting material hold it in a vice and not in the hand.

5. Do not use files or punches as levers, they are brittle and will break easily.

6. Keep the hands behind the working blades of cutting tools and screwdrivers.

7. Use the correct size of spanner over an adjustable tool.

8. Ensure you wear Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) when it is required.

2. Scrap tools that are worn or damaged beyond repair.

3. Chisels and punches must be ground to prevent mushrooming.

4. Keep the edges of cutting tools sharp.

5. Do not use extensions to give extra leverage on spanner, the jaws will be damaged and weakened.

6. Return tools to their toolbox or stores at the end of each shift.

7. When you have finished with tools, ensure they are stored so they do not cause a hazard to others, e.g. Stanley knives with the blade retracted.
