Ladders/Stepladders

Ladders are probably the most misused pieces of access equipment!

Why:                Mess around with ladders/step ladders and there is only one way to go.

Outline:           This talk will cover Pre-use checks, safe use of ladders and hazards.

Pre-use Checks

  1. Ladders must be stored correctly and inspected regularly.
  2. Check for splits or cracks in the stiles and rungs.
  3. Check for cracked or damaged welded joints, loose rivets, or damaged stays.
  4. Ensure that none of the rungs are missing or loose.
  5. Do not use painted ladders, this can hide cracks and flaws.
  6. Report any found defects, label as defective and remove from site ASAP.
  7. A ladder register can ensure no inspection is missed.

Q. What checks should be conducted prior to use?

Q. Having found a defective ladder, what would you do?

Safe Use of Ladders/Stepladders

  1. A ladder should only be used for light work of a short duration.
  2. Ladders should be set on a firm base and leaning at the correct angle (out 1 and up 4).
  3. Access ladders must be tied near the top and extended a safe distance past the landing stage.
  4. If an access ladder cannot be secured at the top it must be secured at the bottom.
  5. For added safety the base of the ladder can be footed, staked, or buried for extra safety.
  6. Do not stand on the top three rungs
  7. Ensure you footwear is free from excessive mud or grease before you climb.
  8. When climbing always face the ladder and use both hands on the stiles up and down.
  9. Do not over-reach from a ladder, ensure your belt buckle (navel) stays between the stiles or move it.
  10. If using extension ladders, each section must overlap

(a). 2 Rungs for ladders up to 5 metres (closed length).

(b). 3 Rungs for ladders 5-6 metres (closed length).
